Scene Around Town, Katy Trail Weekly (May 14, 2021)
As the Katy Trail Weekly’s Society Editor I oversee the publication's Scene Around Town feature, which shines a spotlight on nonprofit and community events each week. In the May 14-20 issue, I was pleased to spotlight the 33rd Annual Jim Bradshaw Memorial Stars in Recovery event featuring the legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard which took place on Thursday, April 15th at Artspace111 in Fort Worth, with hundreds more watching the program virtually. Upon entering the venue, guests browsed the silent auction items while enjoying a stripped-down performance from local musician, Rachel Stacy. Once inside the reception hall, Event Chair Shauna Jenkins, welcomed attendees and brought Recovery Resource Council CEO, Eric Niedermayer and Board of Directors Chairwoman, Maureen Maidlow to the stage to share new findings about how alcoholism and drug addiction are impacting our North Texas community. They talked about the many ways the Council is supporting those seeking recovery and the programs in place to those seeking a life in recovery the tools to do so. Robin Bagwell, daughter of the late Jim Bradshaw (for whom this event is named) thanked those in attendance for their support and encouraged those watching virtually to continue to bid generously on auction items. Rachel Stacy took to the stage to share her personal connection to Hubbard, who encouraged her to seek sobriety nine years ago, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room when the two of them hugged onstage in celebration of their shared journey in recovery. Hubbard had the audience chuckling with his many antidotes and stories. He generously shared many nuggets of wisdom acquired over the many years of his personal recovery journey that touched everyone in the room and those watching at home. It was an exciting surprise, when Hubbard treated guests to a song and closed the show by singing, “The Messenger”. Since its inception, the annual Stars in Recovery Luncheon has featured well-known and beloved celebrities speaking publicly about their struggles and triumphs over alcohol, substance misuse and mental health issues. Due to restrictions, this year’s Stars event was offered both live and virtually. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Recovery Resource Council, North Texas’ largest non-residential non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery of thousands of individuals and families struggling with alcohol, substance misuse and trauma.
Also featured in this week’s issue was the announcement of 2021 Partners Card fundraiser benefiting Dallas-based family violence agency, The Family Place. The 10-day shopping and dining extravaganza will take place from Friday, October 29, to Sunday, November 7, 2021 throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Leading up to October 29, shoppers can purchase a Partners Card this year for $75. A Partners Card purchase grants a 20% discount at retailers and a 10% discount at restaurants during the 10-day event. The purchase of a $75 Partners Card pays for one night of safety at The Family Place. Additionally, 100% of a Partners Card purchase directly supports The Family Place programs and services of family violence. Partners Cards go on sale September 1, 2021. Lastly, I highlighted Maverick Fitness, who owns 34 Orangetheory® Fitness studios in North Texas, makes it a priority to give back to the communities they serve through their OrangeLove program and Day of Service initiatives as well as other programs such as offering free monthly classes for Phoenix House in various studios in North Texas. Maverick Fitness Executive office is dedicated to doing quarterly Days of Service working with local non-profits such as Frisco Family Services.
